General Summary Under general direction, but following defined policies and procedures, performs general and complex maintenance and repairs of the hospital’s facilities and equipment requiring a basic knowledge of several trades such as electricity, plumbing, and mechanics. Incumbents may be assigned to a specific area but are required to perform routine preventive maintenance and repair functions for other areas of the hospital on assigned shift such as minor plumbing repairs, repairing patient beds, installing/changing lights and the like. Essential Duties Makes routine maintenance inspection rounds. Identifies and investigates malfunctions of equipment and facilities, diagnoses cause and determines solution to routine problems. Refers problems unable to resolve to supervisor for disposition and/or direction. Responds to immediate requests for service as directed by supervisor and/or following defined practice for request from various departments, both emergency and non-emergency. Utilizes basic knowledge of facility/equipment maintenance repairs and/or replaces malfunctioning items. This work includes repairing patient beds, call light bed cords and related equipment, adjusting television sets in patient areas, making routine plumbing, mechanical and electrical repairs, replacing locks, making routine adjustments to the hospital’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment (if needed) and so forth depending on area/shift assigned. Installs equipment as required by various departments. Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment and facility areas and maintains appropriate records. Maintains tools, equipment and work area according to established policies and practices for safety standards. Assists groundskeeper in snow removal duties as necessary. Clears the hospital facilities of snow on the roadways, sidewalks and entrances. Applies substances to reduce ice hazards. Operates snow removal equipment. Follows on-call policy as directed by Supervisor. Assists in the preparation, set-up and breakdown of various events sponsored by the Hospital. Performs duties related to renovation projects; such as installing electrical, plumbing, HVAC equipment, etc. Frequent contact with hospital personnel and patients, occasional contact with outside vendors or local inspection agencies. Ability to carry tools, take machinery apart, and handle various tools as needed. Some lifting of equipment may occur, seldom over 50 pounds. Ability to operate snow removal equipment and occasionally climb ladders. Use of various tools such as drills, grinders, saws, pipe cutters, pipe threaders, torches, electric snakes, pumps, hand tools, loaders, ladders, snow removal equipment such as utility stake truck, 4/4 snowplow, snow blowers, etc. Exposure to extreme hot and cold environments. May work in crowded spaces. May be exposed to hazardous fumes, waste and infectious diseases. May be exposed to dangers from various tools used in performing jobs. Hazard decreased by following appropriate safety standards. Standard Qualifications Requires a high school diploma program or GED and completion of a post-secondary vocational program. Requires a minimum two years’ working experience as a maintenance mechanic in a large institution.
